The team at Acer recently undertook work near Newport at a site adjacent to a railway line. The purpose of the assessment was to establish the conditions of the site and the associated ecological risks to the proposed works. To search for the presence of any relevant habitats with potential to support any protected or notable species and any evidence of said species, an ecological walkover survey was conducted.
Some of the protected or notable species we search for include:
• Any nesting birds
• Roosting, foraging, and commuting bats
• Dormice
• Great Crested Newts
• Badgers
• Reptiles
• Other Mammals
Despite not finding any direct evidence of any protected species being present, it was established that the adjacent woodland provided a moderate value habitat for nesting birds, foraging, and commuting bats and some value for dormice and other small mammals. Our ecologists determined that it was best to return for a further assessment to examine if the vegetation clearance has impacted nesting birds or bats to establish if more work was necessary, and as a precautionary measure for any small mammals.
