Serving the Renewable Energy Sector

Renewable energy sources are thought of as more ‘environmentally friendly’ than their fossil-fuel burning counterparts, however, developments such as wind farms and solar installations can have significant effects on the habitats and species of the surrounding environment. Research shows that some species of bats and birds, for example, are prone to colliding into wind turbine developments. The ecology of the site therefore needs to be considered early in the planning stage to prevent delays to the project and for the development to be acceptable in ecological terms. As part of this process an Environmental Impact Assessment is likely to be required.

How can Acer Ecology help?

Acer Ecology are experienced in scoping and carrying out a range of ecology surveys to accompany planning applications for the renewable energy sector. Throughout these projects, we work closely with the client and the appropriate statutory bodies (such as Natural Resources Wales, Natural England and Local Authorities) to ensure that there is a smooth passage through planning.

What surveys would be required?

Surveys that may need to be undertaken for such developments include a Phase 1 habitat survey, which might need to be followed by targeted protected species surveys (often bird and bat activity surveys for wind turbines). The surveys will enable Acer Ecology to assess the potential impact of the development and to find a strategy that works both for wildlife and for your project.
