Preliminary Ecological Appraisal

New IEEM Guidelines for Preliminary Ecological Appraisal

IEEM (the Institute for Ecology and Environmental Management) released its Guidelines for Preliminary Ecological Appraisal (GPEA) in July 2012 as part of its Technical Guidance Series.

The Guidance sets out the best practice procedures for undertaking preliminary ecological surveys and appraisals. In addition, the Guidance aims to improve readability and ease of interpretation via recommendations for standardised terminology to be used in Ecological Appraisal reports.

The Guidelines for Preliminary Ecological Appraisal give recommended terminology for consistency across baseline appraisals to aid developers and planning authorities.

Many alternative terms have been used in the past to describe preliminary survey and reporting: Baseline surveys, Extended Phase 1 habitat survey; Constraints Survey; Ecological Site Assessment; Ecological Site Appraisal; Ecological Scoping Survey and Walkover Survey.
