The top ten botanical families course builds from the basics starting with understanding plant families and how each plant is classified. By the end of the day participants should be able to recognise the common species in 10 of the most frequently occuring plant families. During this course you will have the opportunity to practice your plant identification skills both in the classroom using a range of identification resources and in the second part of the course in the Wetland Reserve. This introduction to the plant identification is ideal both for students and graduates that want to build on their identification skills and anyone looking to start a career in ecology but also for the keen amateur botanist and gardener. The course will involve both indoor and outdoor sessions and will be taught by Acer Ecology’s staff and will be held at Acer Ecology’s office in Cardiff Bay.

The plant families covered in the course will be:

  1. The Buttercup Family – Ranunculaceae
  2. The Cabbage Family – Brassicaceae
  3. The Campion Family – Caryophyllaceae
  4. The Pea Family – Fabaceae
  5. The Carrot Family – Apiaceae
  6. The Rose Family – Rosaceae
  7. The Dock Family – Polygonaceae
  8. The Deadnettle Family – Lamiaceae
  9. The Figwort Family – Scrophulariaceae
  10. The Daisy Family – Asteraceae

Course Booking

  • The course costs £20.00 per person inclusive of VAT.
  • Tea, coffee and biscuits are provided – please bring your own packed lunch.
  • The course will be partly field based and so please wear appropriate footwear and clothing.
  • All attendees will be issued with a certificate of attendance.
  • The course will run from 9.30am until 1.30pm.
  • The course will be held at our office in Cardiff Bay
