Principal Ecologist Job
We are looking for a Principal Ecologist to join our friendly team. You will have a good biological degree, at least 6 years’ relevant professional experience and be a full member of the Chartered Institute of Ecology and Environmental Management (CIEEM). You will have a high level of technical ecological expertise and be involved in all areas of our work but with an emphasis on dealing with protected species issues, in particular bats.
The successful candidate will be expected to manage staff and projects. They will also be involved in costing work and preparing tender;, liaising with clients, other consultants and consultees; organising and supervising sub-contractors and other Acer Ecology staff; undertaking field work, and writing and editing reports. They will prepare, submit and implement European Protected Species Mitigation (EPSM) licences for bats and other protected species as required.
Roles & responsibilities
- Directing and managing projects
- Managing the day-to-day workload of our ecology team
- Managing small and large scale projects
- Overseeing the preparation of fee quotations, tenders and expressions of interest
- Supervising and mentoring junior team members
- Providing in-house continuing professional development (cpd) training
- Undertaking ecology related fieldwork at sites throughout UK
- Liaising with clients and other organisations to promote strong working relationships and effective communication
Essential Requirements
- Experience of supervision, supporting and management of more junior ecologists including in their career development.
- At least 6 years experience
- Excellent interpersonal skills
- Proven technical experience
- Excellent report writing and communication skills
- Experience of critically reviewing others work including preliminary ecological appraisal and protected species survey reports
- Excellent field skills
- Extensive surveying experience including Phase 1/preliminary ecological appraisal and protected species surveys
- Thorough understanding of UK/EU nature conservation legislation and planning policy
- Experience of work in ecological consultancy
- UK protected fauna species survey and mitigation licences (especially bats)
- An ecological degree or related subject
- Full membership of the Chartered Institute of Ecology & Environmental Management (CIEEM)
Other Requirements
- Must be physically fit and be willing and able to able to work in all weather conditions necessary to carry out collection of data
- Be prepared to work throughout South and West Wales as required
- Flexible on working hours, as there will be a significant amount of evening and night work
- A full UK driving license
- Access to your own car, insured for business use
