Badger Survey Carmarthenshire

Acer Ecology is based in Cardiff, but undertake projects all over the country. We are able to provide surveys across Carmarthenshire, including Burry Port, Kidwelly, Llandeilo, Llanelli, Llandovery, Carmarthen, and Whitland. We are also able to provide surveys in the surrounding counties of Pembrokeshire, Ceredigion, south and mid-Powys and Swansea.

Badgers can be found in many different types of habitats, such as open fields, hedgerows, woods, copses, quarries, moorland, and even urban gardens. As such they are often found on developments.

Badgers and their setts are protected under the Protection of Badgers Act 1992, which makes it illegal to kill, injure them or to interfere with a sett.

This makes it illegal to:

• intentionally capture, injure or kill a badger;

• block access, damage or destroy their setts;

• disturb badgers in setts;

• treat a badger cruelly;

• deliberately send or intentionally allow a dog into a sett;

• bait or dig for badgers;

• have or sell a badger or badger parts (dead or alive); and

• mark or attach a device to a badger.

If badgers will be affected by a development, or if works are planned to occur in close proximity to an active sett, you will need a Protected Species Licence before works may begin.

Our ecologists are experienced in badger surveys, bait marking and territory analysis, licensed exclusion, supervision of sett closure and its destruction, and the design of artificial setts, badger fencing and tunnels. Surveys can be undertaken throughout the year, although the period from October to April is the most effective. This is when vegetation cover is reduced, setts are readily visible, and badgers are highly active.
