Geoffroy’s Bat Discovered in the UK

the A bat species normally found on the continent has been discovered in the UK for the first time.

A male Geoffroy’s bat (Myotis emarginatus) was discovered by an ecologist surveying land owned by the National Trust in West Sussex. Geoffroy’s bat is similar to the Natterer’s bat but greyer in colour. It also has a distinctive almost right-angled notch at the top of its ear.

The species, which weighs between seven and fifteen grams, is typically found on the edge of woodland scrub and grassland. It is primarily a permanent resident with migrations usually less than 40 kilometres. It is likely that that the individual has travelled some distance from the continent. In the future, the species may extend its range northwards and become a resident species in the UK.
