BS 5837 2012: Trees in Relation to Design, Demolition and Construction – Recommendations

The new British Standard BS 5837:2012 Trees in relation to design, demolition and construction – Recommendations has recently been published and will take effect from 30 April 2012. It replaces BS 5837:2005 Trees in relation to construction – Recommendations.

Although BS 5837 2012 purports to be a complete revision rather than an amendment, it has not changed drastically from the BS 5837: 2005.

A few minor changes have been made to the way in which survey information is recorded. In addition, category R has been replaced with U to indicate that whilst trees in this category may have no value, there may be no significant reason for their removal.

The way that the root protection area (RPA) is calculated and plotted has been amended, and a modified RPA will now be accepted where it can be justified on sound arboricultural grounds.

The requirements for barriers and ground protection have also been changed allowing greater flexibility depending on site conditions and development proposals.

We offer a comprehensive arboricultural service, including surveys and assessment in compliance with BS5837. For more information about tree surveys, arboricultural or ecological services, call us on 029 2065 0331.
