We are Hiring: Senior/ Principal Ecologist (Home-based)

We are currently recruiting for a Senior or Principal level Ecologist, either based in Cardiff or home-based, within 3 hours travelling time of Cardiff and ideally based either in south-west England, north-west England or the west midlands. The position would be suitable for candidates based in or near Lancashire, Manchester, Cheshire, Shropshire, Staffordshire, Herefordshire, Birmingham, Worcestershire, Gloucestershire, Bristol, Warwickshire, Oxfordshire, Wiltshire, Berkshire, Somerset, Hampshire, Dorset or Devon. Other locations would also be considered.

We are seeking a candidate who is either a very strong botanist (i.e Fisc level 3 or 4) or a Protected Species specialist who holds a class II Natural England bat licence or Natural Resouces Wales licence with handling endorsement and with experience of having successfully applied for, supervised and implemented Natural England or Natural Resources Wales EPS licenses.  You will have a high level of technical ecological expertise relating to either botany / preliminary ecological appraisal or bat surveying. Other related surveys skills are also welcomed.

The role could be available on either a part-time of full time basis.

 Roles & responsibilities

  • Directing and managing projects
  • Providing technical support to the ecology team and mentoring junior team members
  • Undertaking ecology related fieldwork
  • Liaising with clients and other organisations to promote strong working relationships and effective communication

 Essential Requirements

  • Experience of supervision, supporting and management of more junior ecologists including in their career development.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills
  • Proven technical experience
  • Excellent report writing and communication skills
  • Experience of critically reviewing others work including preliminary ecological appraisal and protected species survey reports
  • Excellent field skills
  • Extensive bat survey or botanical experience
  • Thorough understanding of UK/EU nature conservation legislation and planning policy
  • Experience of work in ecological consultancy

 Desirable Requirements

  • An ecological degree/Msc in a science-based subject
  • Full membership of the Chartered Institute of Ecology & Environmental Management (CIEEM)

 Other Requirements

  • Must be physically fit and be willing and able to able to work in all weather conditions necessary to carry out collection of data
  • A full UK driving license
  • Access to your own car, insured for business use
