Grass Snake

Our experienced ecologists have recently undertaken a survey for reptiles on the outskirts of Bath.

There are four widespread species of British reptile – all of which are commonly encountered on development sites. These comprise of: adder, grass snake, common lizard, and slow-worm. These species are given so-called ‘partial protection’ under UK law, and it is an offence to deliberately kill or injure individual animals. The habitats of common reptiles are not specifically protected, though developers are often obliged to replace any reptile habitat lost as a result of development.

There are two rare species of British reptile. These are the smooth snake and the sand lizard, however, these are only rarely found on development sites. If these species are found on a site, a Protected Species Licence is required before works can commence.

Have you been asked to undertake a reptile survey by your local planning authority?
