Preliminary Ecological Appraisal Swansea

Our licensed ecologists have carried out Preliminary Ecological Appraisals (also known as extended Phase 1 habitat surveys, baseline ecological survey, or an ecological constraints survey) in and around Swansea and the Gower, including Swansea city, Gorseinon, Llangennith, Morriston, Llanrhidian, Mumbles, Pontarddulais and Rhossili.

In addition to Swansea, our Cardiff based office makes us well placed to conduct ecological work in the counties surrounding Swansea, including Neath Port Talbot, Bridgend, and Carmarthenshire.

What is a Preliminary Ecological Appraisal?

The site’s features and habitats which may constrain the development are assessed during this survey. The potential of these features and habitats to support protected species is evaluated. No further surveys may be needed if the site is assessed as having a low wildlife interest; however, if necessary, clients are advised to undertake more detailed specialist surveys.

A data trawl is usually undertaken in conjunction with the survey, whereby information about the site and its context are obtained from organisations such as Local Biodiversity Record Centres. This includes information on protected species and Biodiversity Action Plan Priority Species and the presence of Biodiversity Action Plan Priority Species and the presence of nearby statutory protected areas.
