We were commissioned to conduct a survey for otters of a section of the River Tawe off of Brecon Road, Abercrave, Swansea. The survey was undertaken to assess the possible impact to otters of converting a derelict barn adjacent to the river.
A small number of fresh spraints were recorded along the bank of the river, as well as a temporary resting area (holt). The results of the survey were used to reduce any potential impacts to otter as a result of the development.
Otters and their habitats are fully protected under the UK and European law. Developments affecting otters or their resting places will require a European Protected Species Licence prior to the commencement of bank-side works.
Otter surveys are not seasonally constrained and can be undertaken throughout the year, although they can be limited by vegetation cover and weather conditions. It is therefore important to detect the presence of otters at an early stage in the planning process.
Our ecologists are experienced in otter surveying, European Protected Species licensing, and mitigation design and implementation. We cover the South Wales area including Carmarthenshire, Swansea, Neath Port Talbot, Bridgend, Vale of Glamorgan, Cardiff, Powys, and the Valleys.
