dormouse nest tube

We were commissioned to undertake a dormouse survey of a site in Gilwern, near Abergavenny in the Brecon Beacons National Park which was proposed for housing. The survey focused on the following survey techniques:

  • A dormouse ‘nest-tube’ survey which involved deploying 50 nest-tubes across the site, The test-tubes were subsequently checked at monthly intervals from May to November;
  • A ‘nut search’ of hazelnuts showing characteristic signs of gnawing by dormouse;
  • A search for dormouse nests at the base of the trees and shrubs.

Dormice are fully protected under the UK and European law. Therefore, it is an offence to kill, capture, or disturb them, or to damage their habitats.

Our licensed dormouse specialists are experienced in surveying, European Protected Species licensing and mitigation design and implementation. We cover the Brecon Beacons National Park, Monmouthshire, south and mid-Powys, Torfaen and the rest of the Welsh Valleys.
