Wheatear on Bird Survey

Our experienced ornithologists can advise you on survey methodology, legal protection, mitigation options and the timing of development works.

Acer Ecology recently carried out a breeding bird survey at a large site that was proposed for residential development near Exeter in Devon. The mosaic of habitats meant that a good number of common bird species were recorded across the site. Identifying exactly which species were present meant that we were able to recommend appropriate measures to avoid adverse impacts to the birds while enhancing other areas of the site and working alongside our client’s architect to guide the project smoothly through the planning process.

We have the capacity to undertake a wide range of bird surveys including Barn Owl, Vantage Point Survey for Wind Turbine Developments, Breeding Bird Surveys, Winter Bird Surveys, Wetland Bird Survey (WeBS), Common Bird Census (CBC) surveys, Moorland Surveys using the ‘Brown and Shepherd’ methodology and species-specific surveys.

Nearly all birds, their nests and eggs are protected under UK law and some especially rare species are given enhanced protection from disturbance during the breeding season.

Almost all development sites have the potential to support nesting birds and this can impose seasonal constraints on site clearance. It is therefore vital to identify the potential presence of nesting birds early on in the planning process. Acer Ecology can help you achieve this and hence avoid timely and costly delays to your project.

We have the capacity to carry out surveys across Exeter and the surrounding areas, such as Ide, Longdown, Cowley, Broadclyst, Topsham and Exminster.
