Horseshoe bats

We recently carried out a bat survey of a traditional farm building in the Mendips, just north of Wells. The building was well connected to high-quality bat foraging and commuting habitat by a network of linear features. A colony of lesser horseshoe bats were recorded in one of the rooms of the building, while evidence of previous bat occupation was identified elsewhere within the site. We worked alongside our client to ensure that works could progress in a legal manner without adversely affecting the ecological integrity of the bat roost.

Bats and their roosts are fully protected under the Wildlife and Countryside Act and the Conservation of Habitats and Species Regulations 2017.

Acer Ecology is an experienced and expanding ecological consultancy specialising in bat surveys. We are therefore well placed to undertake bat surveys in Wells and across Mendip and Sedgemoor in Somerset, including Wedmore, Cheddar, Shepton Mallet, Glastonbury, Dinder, Worminster, Coxley, Wookey, Upper Milton and Priddy.

Our fully licensed ecologists are experienced in bat survey, European Protected Species licensing, and mitigation design and implementation. We are able to provide a competitive quote to potential clients on a case by case basis. If part of your planning application requires a bat survey then we can help ensure that your development passes smoothly through this process.

The objective of a bat survey is to:

  • Establish the presence/ likely absence of the bat roosts within trees and buildings;
  • Identify the activity of bats across the site and key commuting and foraging routes; and
  • Recommend ecological mitigation and enhancement where required.
