Acer Ecology has recently undertaken badger surveys in Somerset.
Badgers and their setts are protected under the Protection of Badgers Act 1992, which makes it illegal to kill, injure them or to interfere with a sett. Badgers can be found in many different types of habitats, such as open fields, hedgerows, woods, copses, quarries, moorland, and urban gardens.
If badgers will be affected by a development, or works are planned to occur in close proximity to an active set, you will need a Protected Species Licence before works can commence. Surveys can be undertaken throughout the year. However, surveys are most effective from October to April as the vegetation cover is reduced, setts are readily visible, and badgers are highly active.
