Bio
I come from Athens, Greece and I am an MSc in Strategic Marketing graduate from Cardiff University. I’ve spent three months with Acer Ecology as the Marketing and Communications Officer.
The first days…
One of the many reasons that I chose to apply to Acer Ecology, was because working in a niche industry such as that of ecological consultancy, sounded very exciting and challenging. It seemed the perfect place to start my marketing career as if you want to succeed in the marketing field you need to challenge yourself and be able to adapt to the requirements of different industries and develop commercial awareness.
When I first started in Acer Ecology though, I must admit, I was a bit worried that it would be difficult for me because unlike my colleagues I didn’t have an ecology background. Words like Bat logger, social bat calls, soprano pipistrelle etc… well… they sounded like “Greek” to me!
However, with the constant support of my manager, the whole Acer Ecology team and also my personal efforts, I managed to overcome this difficulty quite quickly. In fact, I can now confidently tell the difference between Cock’s foot grass and Yorkshire fog (so, fear not my fellow marketer, you just need to do your reading).
It is hard not to be interested in wildlife when Acer Ecology introduces you to its world.
As Marketing and Communications Officer, I was responsible for a wide array of activities and I was exposed to different marketing concepts. My key responsibilities were in digital marketing with the main focus on social media and e-mail marketing.
I have also assisted in the production of marketing content and materials such as the writing of blog articles, content for Acer Ecology’s website and print materials design. I have helped with the organisation of Acer Ecology events from registration to venue preparation.
Experience and Training
My experience was more than beneficial. It gave me the chance to apply theoretical marketing concepts that I have learned in my degree but also to identify my strengths and weaknesses and work to improve myself. Working in a medium sized company also gave me the opportunity to see the results of my actions quickly and have a feeling of contribution.
The diversity of tasks that I was involved with helped me gain a better understanding of a variety of marketing disciplines and Acer Ecology’s business as a whole. One of the things I really liked about working in Acer Ecology is that constant training is provided so as to help you achieve your potential. I was trained in the use of WordPress, Mailchimp and CorelDraw basics.

Highlights
My experience in Acer Ecology involved participating in a bat survey for the 30DaysWild Campaign, face painting for the RSPB frog competition, a speed boat ride in Cardiff Bay and a staff BBQ (no pictures available as we were occupied eating…).
Overall experience with Acer Ecology 
I really enjoyed my time in Acer Ecology and I am very grateful for the trust that the team of Acer Ecology has shown to me. It was great to be in a workplace where new ideas are welcomed and supported by your colleagues. It certainly was a unique experience to work in such a friendly and diverse environment and meet so many interesting people with a passion for what they do.
