In March 2010, approximately 75 great crested newt carcasses were found in a railway station car park in Cumbria. The newts appeared to have died during their spring migration from nearby hibernation sites on their way to a breeding pond behind the station. Road salt had been laid in the car park two weeks previously, during an unusually late period of freezing weather, and there was circumstantial evidence that residual road salt in the car park had caused these newt deaths. The incident was recently described in the Veterinary Record.
