Acer Ecology has undertaken an otter survey in Brecon in the River Wye

Otters and their habitats are fully protected under the UK and European law. Where a development will affect otters or their resting places, a European Protected Species Licence will be required prior to the commencement of bank-side works.

It is, therefore, crucial to detect if otters are present at an early stage of the planning process.

The experienced ecologists at Acer Ecology are able to perform otter surveys across Brecon. . We also have the capacity to take on surveys in Crickhowell, Hay on Wye, Llangorse, Talgarth and Talybont on Usk.

Otter Surveys and Mitigation

Mitigation for otters may involve locating site compounds away from riverine habitat, restricting lighting in the area near the watercourse at night and stopping construction workers accessing these areas. If there is a chance habitats may be lost due to the proposed development , mitigation may include creating other habitats which will remain unaffected by the works. Sympathetic bridge design and the installation of otter-proof fencing along roads may also be necessary to ensure that otters will be safe and are not forced onto any nearby carriageways during times of high water.

Our ecologists have designed successful mitigation strategies for developments found to be in close proximity to otter habitat allowing developments to go ahead with minimal disruption.
