Our licensed great crested newt specialists have recently undertaken surveys for great crested newts in Caerphilly .
The great crested newt and the habitats which support them are fully protected under UK and EU law. It is therefore an offence to:
- disturb; or
- damage or destroy their ponds.
It is generally assumed that GCN may be present within a terrestrial habitat which is within 500m of a pond that they use for breeding.
We are experienced in the survey, European Protected Species licensing, as well as mitigation design and implementation. We can provide our services across Caerphilly, as well as the surrounding counties of Cardiff and Newport.
Surveys for great crested newts are seasonally constrained to the period mid-March to mid-June when great crested newts are present in their breeding ponds. Outside of this season, terrestrial surveys using drift fencing and pitfall traps can be undertaken to determine their presence in terrestrial habitats.
It is vital to identify the presence of great crested newts as early as possible in the planning process to avoid any timely and costly delays.
