Bird-Survey-Birds-on-Wire

We recently carried out a targeted nightjar survey at a site owned by the forestry commission in Somerset. Sixteen surveyors walked transects across the plantation, listening out for the iconic ‘churring’ of this species.

Acer Ecology are very experienced in undertaking a wide range of bird surveys, including Barn Owl Surveys, Vantage Point Survey for Wind Turbine Developments, Breeding Bird Surveys, Winter Bird Surveys, Wetland Bird Survey (WeBS), Common Bird Census (CBC) surveys, Moorland Surveys using the ‘Brown and Shepherd’ methodology and species-specific surveys.

Our experienced bird surveyors can advise you on survey methodology, legal protection, mitigation options and the timing of development works. We also provide on-site supervision to ensure that your project progresses in a smooth and timely manner through the planning process.

We are well placed to undertake bird surveys across Somerset, as well as the surrounding counties of Devon, Dorset, Wiltshire and Gloucestershire. If part of your planning application requires a bird survey then we can help ensure that your development passes smoothly through this process. We are able to provide a competitive quote to potential clients on a case by case basis.

Nearly all birds, their nests and eggs are protected under UK law and some especially rare species are given enhanced protection from disturbance during the breeding season. Almost all development sites have the potential to support nesting birds and this can impose seasonal constraints on site clearance. Therefore, identifying ecological constraints early in the planning process can prove to be both cost-effective and time-saving in the long run.
