Acer Ecology was commissioned to carry out a protected species survey of 5km of redundant railway line in Caerwent, Monmouthshire. The line was proposed for removal for salvage and reuse.
The railway line passes close to sites of high conservation significance and in close proximity to habitats supporting badgers, great crested newts, dormice, nesting birds, and lesser horseshoe bats.
Acer Ecology prepared a method statement to ensure that the works were undertaken sensitively minimizing disturbance to the site and to protected species. We successfully applied for a Welsh Government licence ensuring that the works were undertaken without causing harm to great crested newts.
Acer Ecology subsequently provided on-site supervision of railway line removal in areas located close to ponds known to support great crested newts.
Do you need a survey for protected species?
As well as badgers, great crested newts, dormice, nesting birds and bats, Acer Ecology are also able to survey for other protected species such as invertebrates, otters, plants, reptiles, water vole, and white-clawed crayfish. Our ecologists cover Monmouthshire as well as Newport, Cardiff, the entire South Wales area, and the border counties of England.
