During the winter period bats are seeking suitable hibernation sites and beginning periods of torpor.
Bat scoping surveys can still be undertaken at this time of year. For building surveys, this involves a site inspection whereby the bat specialist will gain access into all of the internal voids, attics and basements of the building to search for evidence of bats. The exterior of the building is also assessed for potential bat roosting sites and access points.
Depending on the building type and roosting opportunities a scoping survey may be all that is needed. If flight surveys are determined as being necessary these will need to be undertaken during the period from May to September.
