We were commissioned to undertake a dormouse survey of a site in Gilwern, near Abergavenny in the Brecon Beacons National Park which is proposed for housing. The survey focused on the following survey techniques:
- A dormouse ‘nest-tube’ survey which involved deploying 50 nest-tubes across the site, The nest-tubes were subsequently checked at monthly intervals from May to November;
- A ‘nut search’ of hazel nuts showing characteristic signs of gnawing by dormouse;
- A search for dormouse nests at the base of the trees and shrubs.
Our licensed dormouse specialists are experienced in survey, European Protected Species licensing and mitigation design and implementation.
