Bat Survey Ross-on-Wye

We recently carried out a bat survey of an old agricultural barn that was proposed for conversion into a residential dwelling on the outskirts of Ross-on-Wye.

The building was considered to have high potential for use by roosting bats, and was well connected to high quality bat foraging and commuting habitat by a network of linear features. A low number of bat droppings were recorded within the building, and further activity surveys were subsequently recommended. We recorded low numbers of common pipistrelle, soprano pipistrelle and brown long-eared bats using the building. Bats and their roosts are fully protected under the Wildlife and Countryside Act and the Conservation of Habitats and Species Regulations 2017. We then worked alongside the architect to implement mitigation measures to ensure that the bat roost was not adversely affected by the development works.

Identifying ecological issues early on in the planning process means that timely and costly delays can be avoided at a later stage.

We are an experienced and expanding ecological consultancy specialising in bat surveys. We are well placed to undertake bat surveys in and around Ross-on-Wye, including Ledbury, Monmouth, Newent, Coleford, Lydney and Malvern, as well as the Wye Valley and Forest of Dean. We are also able to service the neighbouring counties of Shropshire, Worcestershire, Gloucestershire, Monmouthshire and Powys.

The objective of a bat survey is to:

  • Establish the presence/ likely absence of the bat roosts within trees and buildings;
  • Identify the activity of bats across the site and key commuting and foraging routes; and
  • Recommend ecological mitigation and enhancement where required.

Our fully licensed ecologists are experienced in bat survey, European Protected Species licensing, and mitigation design and implementation. We are able to provide a competitive quote to potential clients on a case by case basis. If part of your planning application requires a bat survey then we can help ensure that your development passes smoothly through this process. Our ecologists are experienced in bat survey, European Protected Species licensing, mitigation design and implementation and supervision of works.
